MLB News – ‘Round The League

With April here, the sports book if full of Major League Baseball action. There are plenty of games on the daily slate to keep fans occupied, and MLB odds are always available to play. One week of the season is now in the books, two very different players are among the big stories in the league so far.

Jason Heyward

Atlanta Braves outfielder and ever-hyped rookie Jason Heyward hit a 451 foot home run in his first plate appearance of the season. He struck out four times after that, but made adjustments to major league pitching, and hit an opposite field home run on the weekend. He has three now on the season, and appears to be comfortable with the hype and with playing at the big level. The Braves have the hitting to contend this season, but the pitching so far has been a problem, giving up 18 runs in a series against the Giants, and losing 17-2 on Monday to the Padres. With veterans Tim Hudson and Derek Lower, Atlanta should get settled in with its pitching staff. However, with Heyward looking comfortable, and all stars such as Brian McCann around him, the Braves are on the upswing and will be competitive for the division until the very end.

From a rookie outfielder with power to a veteran pitcher with poise and precision, the Phillies appear to have made the right decisions with their pitching staff. Roy Halladay has dazzled in his first two starts, and seems to be loving being out of the AL East and now in the National League. In two games, Halladay has thrown 16 innings (out of a possible 18), 17 strikes outs, earned two victories and notched a .56 ERA. Although it was against the Nationals and Astros, Halladay was superb, and there is no reason to suggest he will not pitch like this throughout the year. For the Blue Jays, he was always efficient and competitive, but will benefit from the 8 and 9 hitters in the NL, and will also benefit from not having to face the Red Sox, Rays, and Yankees throughout the season. Look for Halladay to thrive all year long, win twenty games, and lead the Phillies into the postseason.
